My friend, Kenn over at House Blend, shared some pictures of his garden on his blog and I can tell you that I haven't been able to get the pictures out of my mind, especially these two that I have posted here. He has definitely taken what he has learned from Martha Stewart and probably other inspirational gardeners to heart and not only learned from them, but also has practiced what he has learned. I can't help but wonder, if he can achieve a garden that looks like this in such a short growing season in Michigan, what could he do in a climate like we have in Northern California?! He has inspired me to get out there and dig, dig, dig and plant, plant, plant!
I agree - they are beautiful! Especially the path shot with the columars... straight out of MSL! Yes, Ken, please post how you achieve such wonderful gardens with a short growing season. I also have a short time span and just before it starts to frost, it is finally in its glory. Elaine -I'm sure your garden is wonderful for a California landscape. I'm anxious to see photos this year!

What a nice honor to be featured on your blog! The secret to a big garden in Michigan... perennials! Our growing season starts in May and typically ends at the end of October. While it's only 5 months, I try to stretch it a bit... starting plants indoors in March/April and I fill in a lot "gaps" in the garden with a ton of annuals!
ReplyDeleteTo keep things growing well it's all about compost. I stopped using any type of fertilzer (chemical) two years ago... and focus on a lot of compost to add nutrients back into the soil. The plants are stronger and I've found that the flowers actually smell better.
If I could garden year round, I would be in heaven.
Kenn sure does a wonderful job on his garden. I can't wait to see more pictures of it this year!
