The gently steamed broccoli florets and stalks are stirred into a mixture of plain bread crumbs seasoned with salt and pepper that have been cooked with some melted butter and garlic. Add zest of a lemon and some parsley and you have the most flavorful broccoli dish you can imagine. I cooked this small platter of broccoli and proceeded to eat most of it before my husband and daughter arrived home for dinner. Standing at the kitchen counter, I couldn't stop putting stalk after stalk into my mouth. The explosion of lemon zest and garlic bread crumb-coated broccoli is addicting. I happily made another batch when John and Susi arrived home.
They both enjoyed this dish and also ate it with their fingers. No forks needed here! This is a perfect picnic side dish as it tastes good either warm or cold.
See how the other FFwD members made this dish over at French Fridays with Dorie. You can find this recipe on p. 334 of Dorie Greenspan's Around My French Table.
Next French Friday: Vanilla Éclairs

I need to bottle up that smell when the zest hits the butter, garlic and breadcrumbs... oh my! Dorie sure knows how to elevate an 'everyday' vegetable. Happy Friday!
ReplyDeleteI thought this was delicious too.
ReplyDeleteOoh! Good to know that this would probably be a good dish cold as well because I definitely loved it straight from the pan. Great post!
ReplyDeleteOh my... I can see where this could get addicting!! Love the idea of it!
ReplyDeleteFunny...we ate this one with our fingers too...couldn't help it. It was too good to leave alone. Always enjoy your posts.
ReplyDeleteI just loved that smell! So glad you enjoyed this one - it was out of this world! :)
ReplyDeleteHmmm. We never got around to a cold version, but good to know! Glad this was a hit for you.
ReplyDeleteWow, does that look good Elaine! Sounds like everyone loved this...the simplest recipes are always the best, right? Happy Friday!
ReplyDeleteThis was addicting! Great idea to pack this for a picnic.
ReplyDeleteIt was great finger food! And I was surprised as well, on how delicious it was!
ReplyDeleteWe loved this one too! I have a funny image of you standing at the counter eating your broccoli. :)
ReplyDeleteI love how golden brown your breadcrumbs look! Great pictures.
ReplyDeleteI can bet that all of us who cooked this stood by our counter eating the broccoli with our fingers while it was still cooking! It was just that delicious!
ReplyDeleteI agree...I couldn't stop eating it either!
ReplyDeleteNice to have an easy recipe that tastes so good. I ate mine hot, but now that you mention it, I'll have to try it cold too.
ReplyDeleteI also was eating this as it was cooking :)) I couldn't get enough of it... it was delicious!
ReplyDeleteExplosion of flavour is exactly the right way to describe this dish. Addictive is also apt. I'm glad to hear that it's good cold, too. We had it as a side dish, but could have been well satisfied with a bigger portion on its own.
ReplyDeleteThis looks wonderful. I know my family would love this. I hope you have a great day. Blessings...Mary
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought about it as a picnic dish, great idea!
ReplyDeleteI had the same reaction as you-standard ingredients, no unusual combos (like Beggar's Linguine :) yet the results were over the moon. Nana enjoyed this big time as well- though she used this combo herself before. Big big winner in this neck of the woods. Broccoli never tasted so good.
ReplyDeleteYes, very addicting!
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! Crumb coated broccoli, I would never have thought of this...!!
ReplyDeleteI had this cold from the fridge for lunch today :) it was really good but I still prefer my broccoli steamed w just a little lime juice.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, my mouth is watering after reading this. I definitely have to go out and make this dish. That is exactly what I did when we made the green beans with pancetta. I stood in the kitchen and ate them at the counter after I snapped a few pics b/c I couldn't stop eating them! You've convinced me to make sure I make this recipe. Your broccoli looks delicious with those golden breadcrumbs!
ReplyDeleteLove it!! As a huge broccoli and garlic fan, I can only imagine how wonderful this dish must taste :o)
ReplyDeleteYour pictures look great. I'm a little late this week because it was spring break and we were just busy. However, I'm making this dish tomorrow and will post my pics then. I love going through and reading how everyone else did theirs!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful broccoli! Perfect for this time of year - and who doesn't like a little garlic with their veggies? Sounds like this is now a staple in your repertoire!
ReplyDeleteNom nom nom nom NOM.
ReplyDeleteA lovely combination of flavours!
