French Friday with Dorie: Garlicky Crumb-Coated Broccoli

All I can say about this week's French Friday with Dorie recipe is, "WOW!" Just like the green beans that I made a few months ago, I really didn't expect such a simple recipe to pack such a huge punch.

The gently steamed broccoli florets and stalks are stirred into a mixture of plain bread crumbs seasoned with salt and pepper that have been cooked with some melted butter and garlic. Add zest of a lemon and some parsley and you have the most flavorful broccoli dish you can imagine. I cooked this small platter of broccoli and proceeded to eat most of it before my husband and daughter arrived home for dinner. Standing at the kitchen counter, I couldn't stop putting stalk after stalk into my mouth. The explosion of lemon zest and garlic bread crumb-coated broccoli is addicting. I happily made another batch when John and Susi arrived home.

They both enjoyed this dish and also ate it with their fingers. No forks needed here! This is a perfect picnic side dish as it tastes good either warm or cold.

See how the other FFwD members made this dish over at French Fridays with DorieYou can find this recipe on p. 334 of Dorie Greenspan's Around My French Table.

  1. I need to bottle up that smell when the zest hits the butter, garlic and breadcrumbs... oh my! Dorie sure knows how to elevate an 'everyday' vegetable. Happy Friday!

  2. Ooh! Good to know that this would probably be a good dish cold as well because I definitely loved it straight from the pan. Great post!

  12. I can bet that all of us who cooked this stood by our counter eating the broccoli with our fingers while it was still cooking! It was just that delicious!

  14. Nice to have an easy recipe that tastes so good. I ate mine hot, but now that you mention it, I'll have to try it cold too.

  16. Explosion of flavour is exactly the right way to describe this dish. Addictive is also apt. I'm glad to hear that it's good cold, too. We had it as a side dish, but could have been well satisfied with a bigger portion on its own.

  19. I had the same reaction as you-standard ingredients, no unusual combos (like Beggar's Linguine :) yet the results were over the moon. Nana enjoyed this big time as well- though she used this combo herself before. Big big winner in this neck of the woods. Broccoli never tasted so good.

  22. Oh wow, my mouth is watering after reading this. I definitely have to go out and make this dish. That is exactly what I did when we made the green beans with pancetta. I stood in the kitchen and ate them at the counter after I snapped a few pics b/c I couldn't stop eating them! You've convinced me to make sure I make this recipe. Your broccoli looks delicious with those golden breadcrumbs!
