When we lived in England when I was a child, we had a Monkey Puzzle Tree in our front yard. It was a tall tree and one that you couldn't climb, but I was always curious about it and fascinated when it dropped its prickly spines and would wonder how the tree got such a name. So it is with this bread. Who knows where the name came from? But, frankly I don't really care because this is one of the most simple sweet breads to make and for those of you who love cinnamon toast as much as I do you will no doubt love this.
I enjoyed breaking the dough apart with my hands and rolling it into balls and even though dipping them into melted butter and then dipping them into the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture was completely messy, it was also the most fun. This would be fun to make with young children and the next time our niece comes over I am going to make this with her.
It was hard to stop eating this once we got started. My husband liked it better cold, but my son and I preferred it when it was warm, although none of us could stop popping one or two into our mouths.
