Valentine Wreath

We were blessed with Spring-like weather this weekend after having some extremely cold days last week, so Saturday was a perfect day to spend a few hours in the backyard making a Valentine wreath. I was inspired by a diy heart wreath project I saw in the February issue of Southern Living. Since I have Nandina growing in my yard which was sorely in need of a haircut I thought this would be a perfect Valentine project for me to work on.

You don't need very many supplies for this project, so the cost to make it is relatively low. You'll need a heart-shaped grapevine wreath for the base, floral tape to wrap the branches of Nandina, wire cutters, and a paddle of wire. That's it. Oh, and the Nandina, of course, or you could use any other red berry shrub you might have in your garden.

Since I often make wreaths I already had the floral tape, wire cutters and paddle wire on hand, and the Nandina was free, so the only cost was the grapevine heart wreath which I bought at Michael's for $2.99 (with coupon). Depending on the size of your wreath base, you want to cut the Nandina branches 6-8 inches in length and wrap several branches together with the floral tape. You then wire the branches to the front of the base and work around the wreath until it is covered. This is such a quick and easy project.

It felt so great to spend a few hours working on a craft project in the sunshine while listening to the birds singing and watching them feed once they got used to me being out there with them. And the finished wreath adds such a cheerful welcome to our porch for our guests, and us, to enjoy. I hope you'll make one!
