January Blooms Day

This has been a cold January for us here in Northern California with temperatures dipping below freezing for many successive nights. But even with the freezing temperatures some of my plants are thriving, especially the ones that usually bloom this time of year anyway and the ones that are under the overhang of the house and are protected from frost.

I should be thinking of pruning back the roses, but I have a hard time when a few of them are still in bloom albeit showing a little worse for wear.

My azalea, 'Happy Days,' is blooming lovely right now.

I love primroses this time of year because their faces are so bright and colorful against the winter landscape.

This little cyclamen in a pot on the back patio is slowing coming back.

  3. You have a wonderful selection of blooms to show off. Such lovely colours!

Sorry to hear you haven't had much luck with your Mandevillas. I don't have trouble with aphids on them, but something afflicted my white one last year.

I never did work out what was wrong with it, but it's come back. I just cut it right down and then left it alone. Perhaps patience is the answer ... give them a chance to return bigger and better.

  6. I'm with you - I need to get out and prune my roses, but I can't bear to cut them quite yet. Same with my hydrangeas, which still have gorgeous dried blooms on them. Where in NorCal are you? I live in Los Altos...

  8. No GBBD for me with deep snow cover here and more expected today plus no flowering houseplants so I am enjoying the Southern Hemisphere and California gardens! Beautiful primroses, I have a collection I love them so much.
