Daffodil Hill is a place that I have heard about and have wanted to visit for years, but we have just never made the trip. This year I decided that we simply had to go, and so, we took off early this morning to see this springtime phenomenon.
Daffodil Hill is a 540 acre ranch near Jackson, about 50 miles from Sacramento, nestled in the foothills of the Sierra. The ranch was purchased by the McLaughlin's in 1887. They bought it from a Dutchman who had planted daffodils from his native country around his homestead. These daffodils became Lizzie McLaughlin's prized possessions and she began planting, dividing, and replanting daffodils each year to increase the size of their garden. The family continues this legacy and plants an estimated 7 and 8 thousand new bulbs - both daffodils and tulips - each year. There are approximately 6 acres in daffodils - 300 varieties and 500,000 blooms. Over the years so many people stopped by to see and admire the daffodils that the family started opening it up to the public between March and mid-April each year, so that everyone can enjoy the beautiful blooms.
Even though the daffodils will probably be at their peak in about two weeks, we were not disappointed. The daffodils are planted in drifts and they are so beautiful to see. There were preparations underway for a wedding later in the day. What a perfect setting for a wedding! Besides seeing all the beautiful daffodils and other blooms, one of the highlights of the day was viewing the beautiful peacock who 'danced' for us. He was magnificent to behold and he knew it!

On our way back home, we decided to stop in at The Train Room. We were so happy to see that one of the trains was running! Many of the flowers were blooming and the water was flowing - it was so relaxing and enjoyable watching the train travel through the 'room.' We are so thankful that we discovered this treasure during our last trip through Amador City. I don't think that we will be able to drive through the town without making a stop to see 'our' little train room.

Today was just one of those glorious days where you find inspiration everywhere you turn. I took so many pictures that I put them in a slideshow for your viewing pleasure. I hope you enjoy them.
What a wonderful day! Nothing says spring like daffodils!
ReplyDeleteWow - that's a great place to visit! Especially with the nice weather you're having - not quite there yet where I'm at! It was neat for you to actually see a train at the "room" too! The peacock is beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like the perfect 'field trip' to take on a Sunday! Thanks for sharing it with us!
