French Friday with Dorie
While making this week's dish I felt like it was déjà vu and then I remembered it was pretty much the same preparation for the asparagus in the Bacon and Egg Asparagus Salad we made last year. I don't really enjoy peeling the asparagus, but it sure makes the asparagus cook faster. It would have been easier to peel thicker stalks, but a bunch of thin asparagus was in our farm fresh csa box this week. Perfect timing!
I wish I could tell you, though, what this recipe tasted like as written, but when Dorie said to set aside the walnut oil and lemon juice mixture - that's exactly what I did. And I forgot about it. But, I can tell you that even without this mixture the asparagus and bits of bacon and onion was pretty tasty.
After a busy week at work and coming home tired every night, it was nice to have a simple recipe to prepare. We nibbled on this with leftovers from the previous night, but it would be a perfect side for so many main dishes.
See what the others thought about it over at French Fridays with Dorie. Next week's recipe is Sardine Rillettes. Now that should be interesting!

I'm sure the same thing would have happened to me with the mixture if I was doing this book, those things always happen to me!
ReplyDeleteYou are right, this is reminiscent of the salad from last year.
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely CSA box! Enjoy.
Wonderful looking pictures. Your serving platter sure looks wonderful with this dish!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice Easter!
Thank you, Andrea. The platter/bowl was my mom's. She always served asparagus with hollandaise sauce in it.
DeleteI am so jealous of your CSA box! One of the things I miss the most about California is the amazing fruits and vegetables. Glad you enjoyed this one - I'm nervous for next week!
ReplyDeleteI am nervous about next week as well!
DeleteThe ease and simplicity of this recipe did have its appeal! So dose next week's sardine recipe, although I'm on the fence with that one still... LOL! :) Great job!

That's my job, to set things aside and forget them. Being tired does it to you. And I didn't peel my asparagus...every bite was too good and I didn't want to take away any of it. We like this recipe. It's nice to be encouraged to do something special with simple foods now and then.
ReplyDeletePerfect timing, indeed! It looks wonderful - Happy Easter, Elaine! :)
ReplyDeleteLoving your CSA box & very jealous! You californians have it very good. And your recipe looks quite tasty as well. It was a bit similar to last year's recipe.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful platter (and veg) Happy Easter!
ReplyDeleteHow funny! Another blogger put eggs on her asparagus and I thought the same as you. Great post!
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful, Elaine! Now on to the sardines...this one could get interesting :) Have a fabulous Easter, my friend!
ReplyDeleteReally, how bad can anything with asparagus and bacon be? This looks great. I will have to try this recipe when I get asparagus next.
ReplyDeleteLove that photo of your CSA goodies - very inspiring. And the "putting aside" to end up forgetting sounds exactly like what would happen in my kitchen. Been there. Nana and I both enjoyed this one and my younger son declared it his favorite Dorie recipe yet. I am not expecting any competition for this title from next week's sardines.....
ReplyDeleteI agree that this would have been tasty, even without the oil and lemon juice. Happy Easter!
ReplyDeleteYou totally made me smile with the "set aside and forgot about it" incident! Good thing the dish tastes great even without the dressing. Perfect timing with your farm fresh box of goodies! We're still deep in winter produce though ramps are starting to show up in markets now. You're California Living...I'm California Dreaming!
ReplyDeleteRamps definitely are the beginning of spring produce. You should see a switch in your CSA box very soon.
DeleteYou made me smile! That's sounds just like something I would do!
ReplyDeleteYou'd never guess from your pics! Looks great!
What a gorgeous CSA box! I'm so jealous. Fresh local produce is a couple months away here in the Northeast. Your asparagus, even with out the dressing, looks great, and I'm sure it tasted fine. Have a Happy Easter!
ReplyDeleteLol, guess you can use the dressing for a salad. I've been a member of a local csa and it's so much fun figuring out what to do with what's in the box each week. It kinda feels like the cooking show 'Chopped'
ReplyDeleteMmmm... I've never heard of CSA! What a neat thing - and what fresh-looking veggies! Well, you gave up some fat with the walnut oil - think if it that way. It still looks delicious and healthy!!!
ReplyDeleteElaine, Loved the picture of your CSA box. Every delivery is a surprise, right? I liked this asparagus dish but prefer my asparagus "naked" I think. Just roasted with a little hazelnut or walnut oil and lemon. That would have been fine also. I loved the leftovers too. Mary
ReplyDeleteDelicious! This asparagus looks terrific. I skipped the hazelnut/walnut oil - not on hand, and it tasted great without it!
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous of your CSA basket! Perfect timing for this delicious asparagus dish.
