Olive Oil Ice Cream

French Friday with Dorie
I love this time of year, but it doesn't love me very much. I have been suffering with a cold and allergies for the past couple of weeks and haven't felt like doing much. Certainly no cooking or baking, or blogging for that matter. And not even visiting your blogs and leaving comments which I have missed and hope to catch up with over the weekend. The last few days I finally pushed myself to get back in the kitchen to make dinner and dessert which was this week's olive oil ice cream recipe. I have to say that as much as I enjoy making ice cream, I was skeptical about the addition of olive oil.

I few weeks ago, while I was out shopping, I found a 'fruity' olive oil from Spain that I thought would be good to try for this recipe. The custard base for the ice cream was easy to put together and the olive oil gave the ice cream a very pretty yellow color. I chilled it over an ice water bath for about 30 minutes before churning. After being in the freezer for a couple of hours we had a taste and enjoyed the slight fruity flavor and the creaminess. My family was so surprised that it was made with olive oil.

In the recipe, Dorie says that the olive oil ice cream goes well with chocolate, so when I got home from work yesterday, I made some gluten-free fudgy brownies - a recipe from the June issue of Everyday Food - and served little fudgy brownie bits with the ice cream.

It was declared 'fabulous' and right up there with Jeni's Roasted Strawberry and Buttermilk ice cream that I made a few weeks ago. Who would have thought that a little bit of olive oil in ice cream would taste so good? I am looking forward to seeing what the rest of the group thought. You can check out the links over at French Fridays with Dorie.

  1. Elaine, So sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling well! I hate when my allergies get the best of me! Which seems to happen every spring. Glad you were able to get into the kitchen to get this one done. We really enjoyed this one, too! Love that you served yours with chocolate brownies…sounds delicious!

  2. Poor you! I hope you feel better very very soon. As for the olive oil ice cream, hmmm. It's one of those things that sounds weird, fashionable, trendy but just not very good! But I can always count on you to convince me otherwise! As for that roasted strawberry ice cream, though, yes please!!!

  4. Awwww. Sorry to hear that you've been under the weather. We are running heavy on pine pollen (and every other kind up here) and it doesn't do good things to everyone :-(
Glad to see you back & hope you feel better soon.
I have a batch of Jeni's roasted rhubarb on the docket for today :-)

  6. Sorry to hear that you have been suffering allergies. My husband gets them this time of year as well, but I think that they are almost finished here. I think this was a great recipe to come back to and hopefully you will be feeling better soon.

  7. Elaine, I was wondering whether you were feeling better by now - it is nice to read that things are a bit better these days. I was wondering about the recipe for the gluten-free fudge brownies from Everyday Food, is this a good recipe that I should try, it is still on my "to bake" list..I am so glad that you and your family liked the Olive Oil Ice Cream too, it is one fabulous recipe, I agree.

Do get better soon - I miss your "Baked" post!!!

  8. I am guessing that a good quality olive oil is necessarily for this to be great. I might need to make this at some point this summer.

    Feel better!

  10. I hope you are feeling much better... your taste buds are compromised if your nose is all stuffy! I'm glad this was a hit for you. I made a stout beer/chocolate ice cream a few weeks ago to take to a potluck party, so the olive oil did not seem that weird.

  11. I know the feeling. I'm getting over a cold that seemed particularly nasty and took its time passing. Sorry, just don't feel like even touching food in that condition but it did feel good to get back in the swing of it. And this one was easy enough for my 'soft re-entry', lol. I see you realized that the key to this one is use regular olive oil and not the infused. I think Dorie's use of "fruity" threw people off. As you made it here it makes a very elegant and sophisticated partner to just about anything... and I have not had chocolate yet but will with the portion I managed to hide from my guests last night! Glad you are feeling better!

  12. I am with you on the allergy thing. I don't know what it is this year but it really takes it's toll. I have been running behind and knocking these recipes out at the deadline and falling behind on commenting (thank goodness for Nana :) Needless to say I was glad this was pretty easy and we were all delighted with the results. My kids said they wished they didn't know ahead of time I had the oil in it- they were not sure they would have noticed. Now on to try other ice cream concoctions :)

  14. I hope your allergy season is over soon and that you're feeling better. I really like the idea of serving this over chocolate brownies. I might try that the next time I make this ice cream!

  17. Thank you for your well wishes, Everyone! They are saying that this is the worst allergy season in years and I believe it. Thank you also for your comments about my ice cream. This was definitely one of those surprises and it it fun to see the expression on their faces when you tell them it is olive oil ice cream. :)

  22. So sorry you are battling the allergies, Elaine. This has been a terrible Spring for those who suffer such maladies here in the desert. My friends with allergies are miserable. It's hard to really do anything. Hopefully the Spring "burst" is about over and you will pep up a bit. You did come through with some delicious looking ice cream and setting it on a bed of brownie chunks was a very, very good idea. One that I will copy with a number of ice cream/gelato/sorbet recipes that I intend to try this Summer. Be better.......
