After they cooled, I put them in the refrigerator to chill and left them there for most of the day until we got home from doing some last minute shopping tonight. I had to experiment with a couple of them though because I have never used the torch. The first one I used brown sugar and it burned in quite a few places, the second one I used raw sugar and John got out his larger torch which was much easier for me to handle and control than the smaller torch. We each had a taste test and it was declared a winner! The custard is so creamy and combined with the crackled sugar is so very delicious.
It is almost 10:00 at night and we haven't eaten dinner yet (my daughter is making dinner so I am not complaining). The remaining crème brûlées will be our midnight dessert. My post is so late, but I can't wait to see what the rest of the French Friday with Dorie group thought of the recipe.
Happy Holidays, everyone!

Those are really gorgeous! They look perfect, and I think leaving the jam/jellly out was a great idea - the custard is delicious by itself and didn't need the distraction.
ReplyDeleteWish I had known about the tweeting - mine took way too long at 200 and I was going nuts.
Merry Christmas to you and your family! Happy French Friday!
Nice, midnight desserts sounds good:)

Happy holidays Elaine! I hope you enjoyed your midnight brulee.
ReplyDeleteThis looks fantastic. I'm glad you found the right oven temperature!
ReplyDeleteLovely, gorgeous and delicious results ! Great job. And how wonderful of you to remind us of how we all help each other with the tips and results of these recipes - it was not simply to make the dish but to share the "issues" and ideas we have along the way. That is one of Nana and my favorite parts and we look forward to sharing much with everyone in 2012 !!
ReplyDeleteThat really looks beautiful, Elaine. I hope you had a very Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteLooks perfect, Elaine! I'll have to try raw sugar with my leftovers as the brownulated sugar mostly burned. I love the pictures with your Christmas tree in the background. I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas!
ReplyDeleteElaine, What perfect looking Creme Brulee! I wish I had one or two in my fridge for a midnight snack! Hope your Christmas was merry!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your creme brûlées! I didn't really like the idea of the jam, more of a purist I guess. I also don't like the idea of brown sugar on top, again the original classic is so good and it's not like most people make it so often anyway! But what a treat to indulge in around the holidays, I'm glad you were happy and successful with these!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures! It looks so pretty next to your Christmas tree. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
