Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas...

It's so hard to believe that it's Christmas Eve. The last few weeks are just a blur - it's almost as if the earth is spinning faster and faster. I thought I would have it together enough to post pictures as I was decorating the house, baking, and doing all the preparations for the holidays, but it just didn't happen. The road is paved with best intentions... So, from my home to yours - Merry Christmas!

Sunday in the City

Where are the days and hours going? I promised to post more pictures of our trip to SF and time has just quickly slipped away. Everything is hustle and bustle because of the holidays, but I hope that all of us stop and take time to enjoy the special moments.

We began our Sunday morning by taking a little early morning walk around Cathedral Hill. I have always been interested in architecture and we found some beautiful churches close to where we were staying. The rosette windows are so gorgeous.

After walking to Taquirea El Patron for our late breakfast of chiles quiles, we checked out of the hotel and headed over to the Mission District where we decided to spend the day. It was nice to see so many open air markets like this one throughout the area.

There were so many interesting shops along Mission that it took us hours to go through them all. We also stopped at a few community thrift shops along the way and found some books. One of the most interesting shops, though, was this store called Paxton Gate. I have never been into a store quite like it. It was a mixture of part garden design, part taxidermy, part fossils and rocks, and park small animal skeletons. They also had a wonderful collection of succulents and ferns. Their sign outside says that they have a collection of curiosities and oddities and I would agree - very interesting store and one to go back and visit when there is more time.

Here is a row of houses that were nestled in between stores.  The one house certainly stands out amongst its neighbors.

This house struck me with all the gold detail - even on the fence!

By this time it was getting to be late in the afternoon, so we made a quick stop at the beach and then continued on to take pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Our final stop was at Fishermans' Wharf where we ate our requisite shrimp roll sandwich before heading back home. It was a really fun weekend and I hope we get back to the City very soon.

Holiday Weekend in SF

I've always wanted to see San Francisco during the holidays and this past weekend we finally went into the City to see the sights and sounds of Christmas. We arrived in the City early afternoon.

This is a view from the Bay Bridge.

Shortly after we checked into the hotel, we decided to walk the few blocks to Union Square. On the way there we discovered a great taqueria and stopped in for a late lunch. We ordered chiles quiles because that is one of our favorites and they were hands down the best we have ever had! They were so good that we went there on Sunday and had them again for breakfast. The next time you are in San Francisco, you simply must stop in Taqueria El Patron on Geary Street.

When we got to Union Square I couldn't believe the size of the crowd. I don't know why I was surprised - it after all was San Francisco and a holiday weekend. Here are a few shots outside of Macy's.

There were vendors outside of Macy's selling hot roasted chestnuts and coffee - but, not Starbucks. The San Francisco Macy's is the largest Macy's that I have been into. There were 6 floors above ground and 2 below. We spent 4 hours there and only made it to 2 floors - the floors that had Martha's Collections, of course.

When we walked inside we were greeted by the most beautiful decorations! I was so overwhelmed that I didn't take that many pictures inside. People were literally everywhere and most of them had cameras in hand - snapping away. I took a few pictures inside the store.

Loved the way Martha's Trousseau bedding was displayed and decorated.

This picture didn't turn out that well, but it was one of my favorite trees that was decorated with Martha's Christmas Collection. It was done in white, ice blue, and silver. There were a total of 8 Martha trees. People were snatching decorations left and right. You couldn't put anything down because it would be snatched right from under nose. I am not kidding! I have never experienced anything like this before. It was fun, too, though because as I was carrying my ornaments around quite a few guys came up to me and asked where I got my ornaments. They defintely liked Martha's!

I enjoy looking at table settings in the fine china department. You can get such great ideas. Here is one done in gold with some of Martha's wedgewood china. So elegant and beautiful!

Notice the detail on the table. That is a Waterford crystal compote sitting on a gold doily with one of Martha's ornaments inside. Perfection!

Here is a more casual table setting, but I really liked it and loved the texture and colors of the quilt. It worked perfectly with the Fitz & Floyd china. The decorations on the napkins are Martha's gingerbread Christmas ornaments. They were made to go with this china!

Here is a picture taken from the 6th floor window of Macys.

These are pictures of Macy's display windows outside. It was difficult to get good photos because it was not only night, but also because there were so many crowds of people filing past them to look. They were pretty spectacular and the pictures don't do them justice.

Another favorite pastime of ours in the city is to watch the street performers. They are on almost every street corner in Union Square. This guy was truly amazing. I wish you could hear the music that was coming from those kitchen pots and plastic pails. At one point he even juggled sticks of fire in the air and then somehow smoothly picked up his drumsticks again without missing a beat.

This guy is a really talented singer. He sang songs from the 60s and 70s - he was a real crowd pleaser.

By this time it was pretty late and the stores were beginning to close. It was time to head back to the hotel. Check back tomorrow and I will have some pictures of our Sunday in the city.

Project Feeder Watch

The Project FeederWatch 2008-09 season began on Saturday, November 8th, but you can sign up any time. FeederWatchers keep track of their birds through the winter and report their tallies each week. It has been a bevy of activity at my feeders these last couple of weeks as migratory birds are stopping by for a quick visit and a bite to eat before they continue on their journey further south.

Studies show that time spent watching nature can reduce stress. Don't you need a little stress reducer in your life? This is a great activity to do with young children, or even older children. You can learn more by visiting the PFW Web site.

And don't forget to mark your calendars for the Great Backyard Bird Court that takes place February 13-16, 2009. Participants in the 2008 count submitted over 85,000 checklists and identified 635 species!

Ruofs - A Sacramento Icon

I drive by Ruofs (pronounced Rufus) every day on my way home from work. He proudly stands outside Rulands Used Office Furniture Store on 16th Street as you leave downtown Sacramento. My drive home wouldn't be the same without him.

Anticipation...

I love seeing the leaves on the trees finally changing, but with temperatures still hovering in the low 80s the trees are slow to strut their stuff this year.

This time of year always puts me in the mood to do a little bit of baking. Eariler in the week, I baked a pumpkin pie using the recipe on the Libbey's canned pumpkin. The crust, however, is Martha's pate brisee. The pie was so very creamy and had just the right amount of cinnamon and pumpkin spices and the crust was flaky - it didn't last long in my house.

Bartlett pears are in season here right now and since I had a few on hand that were getting pretty ripe I decided to try making a pear galette. I have made galettes before, but not with pears. I saw Martha making it on her show a month or so ago and it looked so delicious. I love the rustic, no-fuss look of the galette and the added sparkle of the sanding sugar on the crust gives it a sweet crunch. The taste and texture of the pears with the apricot jam makes this a perfect fall pie.

I hope you do some baking and that you have a wonderful Fall weekend!

Food Network Magazine

I stopped by the grocery store on my way home from work today and took a look at the magazine stand hoping to find the new Martha Stewart Holiday issue. It wasn't on the shelves yet, but I did see a new magazine - the premiere issues of Food Network Magazine.

Curious, I picked up a copy fully expecting it to be one huge ad for the Food Network. I was pleasantly surprised, however, because inside were eye catching photos and mouthwatering recipes. Included in this issue is a peek into Tyler Florence's home kitchen, and a step-by-step photo guide to a pizza recipe from Ina Garten's new cookbook, Back to Basics. There were also recipes for everyone - the weekend cook who enjoys cooking the Sunday dinner, the Vegetarian, and the Pasta Lover. And, of course, the Dessert lover.

There are also food tips and a column by food critic, Ted Allen, and it includes a small removeable insert of "50 Toast Toppers" - perfect with the holidays right around the corner.

The focus "Cook Like a Star" I found to be the biggest drawback to the magazine, but I think there are some really good features and while it is no
Everyday Food, I would pick it up again, if for no other reason than to see recipes from some of my favorites over at the network. And for $3.99 - it doesn't take a huge bite out of your wallet.

He's So Pretty!

I know that the calendar says that we are well into Fall now, but we have had fairly warm temperatures until this past weekend. The little bit of rain that we got and the cool breezes, made me feel like it was finally time to start getting the autumn decorations out. I thought about working on a few Halloween projects as well, but didn't get any of those projects done over the weekend. So I decided today to stop procrastinating and get at least one of them out of the way this afternoon even though mother nature has done it again and we are back in the low 80s. Sigh. It is just so difficult to get in the mood for pumpkins when I am craving an ice cream cone.

I bought this skull at Walmart over a month ago and he has been waiting patiently to be glittered. I have to tell you - it was so much fun! The house is sprinkled with glitter...I am sprinkled with glitter (thankfully, none in my eyeballs - yet!)...but most of it ended up on my skull guy. I used Martha's smoky glitter and honestly I think he looks quite elegant. Now...what to glitter next?!

Magnolia Antiques

Magnolia Antiques in Carmichael was having a sidewalk sale yesterday, so I went in to take a look around. I found this beautiful Fostoria footed plate and some crocheted napkins to add to my collection. The pattern isn't showing very well in the picture, but I think it is the buttercup.

I always find something interesting in this store and can spend hours just browsing.

Top Design

Season 2 of Top Design on Bravo TV is proving to be an arresting one. Each week the designers are critiqued by judges Jonathan Adler, Margaret Russell, Kelly Werstler, and host India Hicks. The designers are mentored by Todd Oldham who gives them thoughtful critique before their projects are completed and shown to the judges. This week two designers were booted off.

My favorite designer is Eddie Ross, Senior Style Editor for Martha Stewart Living magazine, and I also like the work of Andrea Schroder, and Nathan. I am looking forward to the rest of the season. If you haven't seen an episode - don't fret - you have only missed two and you can probably catch them repeated during the week. The show airs after Project Runway on Wednesday nights. If you are interested to see what inspires interior designers and how they go about working on their projects - don't miss this show!

Going Bananas

When I have some overripe bananas I usually make some banana nut bread, but I decided to try something a little different this time. On Labor Day I whipped up some banana cupcakes from Everyday Food sans the frosting. They were so moist and delicious that I was asked to make an encore batch last night.

It's really a one bowl recipe - stir in the ingredients and spoon into a cupcake/muffin tin with liners. It's that easy and they taste so good that I don't think I will be making banana nut bread that often in the future.

Inspiration by Mail

While we are doing our part to try to live as green as possible, some things I just have a hard time with going "green." Take, for instance, magazines, books, and catalogs. I love them and I love turning their pages in my hand and reading the text and looking at the pictures. Somehow doing it digitally just doesn't cut it for me. While I enjoy online shopping just as much as the next person, I still enjoy getting catalogs in the mail. Two of my favorites came in the mail this week.

Wisteria is "a catalog of antiques and decorative items for the home and garden." They have unusal items that you don't see anywhere else. Some are expensive and beyond my price range, but some are very affordable. More than anything though I just enjoy looking at the pictures and get inspired just looking at the vignettes they put together. Something that caught my eye was the Turkey Pumpkin Kit on p. 58. Once Halloween is over, I always turn my carved pumpkin that sits on the porch around so that I can get the most out of it and it usually lasts through Thanksgiving. This kit takes that one step further with a metal head and turkey tail - you instantly have a turkey pumpkin! I also love the treasure nests on p. 29. Handpainted birds stand atop iron branches that have a wicker basket where you can toss your keys and other sundry items. I also have a thing about wire this year and fell in like over the wire votive candleholders on p. 52. And, check out the doormats on p. 17. Beautiful! I can go on and on. This is one of their best catalogs yet.

Another catalog favorite of mine is a little closer to home. Napastyle is the brain child of Chef Michael Chiarello from Food Network and Fine Living. I enjoy his show on Food Network and I like his easy style and his way of whipping up Italian food for entertaining family and friends. His strong sense of family is what I enjoy most about him. He is opening up more Napastyle stores and I hope to get to the one in Berkeley one of these days. But, until then I have to be content with shopping through his catalog and online. I love the warm colors of this catalog and the photography is wonderful. Some of my favorite things: the vintage metal bins on p. 41, the ornato doorstop on p. 58, the talavera tile mirrors on p. 65, the surefire wire baskets on p. 68, the pumpkin leaf plates on p. 73, the coverflex silicone lids on p. 75, and the nesting ruffled bakeware also on p. 75.

I think I need to get a large mug of coffee, sit back, and continue shopping!
